Building Safety, Support, and Connection

Hayley’s Story

When Hayley* first came to Pop In, she was simply looking for connection. She arrived with her three-year-old child, hoping that Learn and Play — a warm, welcoming space for parents and little ones — might be a place to breathe, to belong, and to find a moment of peace.

For four months, Hayley and her child came regularly. Slowly, gently, she began to build trust — with the staff, with other mums, and with the space itself.

In time, Hayley began to open up.

She shared that her husband struggled with alcohol — and that his drinking left her feeling anxious, fearful, and very alone. She told Pop In about the nights when he would pass out, and how she would quietly move him to bed so their child wouldn’t have to see. She spoke about the financial control she lived under, and how she was carrying the weight of parenting almost entirely on her own.

By early 2025, things had reached a crisis point. Hayley became involved in legal proceedings, including facing charges and an ADVO. It was an incredibly hard time — but it was also the moment Hayley reached out and allowed Pop In to truly walk beside her.

Since then, Pop In have stood with Hayley through every step of her journey.

She’s received support to understand the signs of healthy and unhealthy relationships, been connected to domestic and family violence resources, and referred to specialist counselling services. Our team has worked closely with police and legal services to help her navigate complex systems — and partnered with DCJ to ensure her child’s safety remained front and centre.

Through it all, Learn and Play remained a safe and grounding space — a place where Hayley and her child could laugh, play, and stay connected to community. Alongside emotional support, Hayley has also received practical help, like meals from our community pantry, especially during times when things felt overwhelming.

When Hayley was recently diagnosed with a health condition, Pop In was there once again — making sure she didn’t face treatment alone, and that her wellbeing stayed a priority.

Today, more than three years since that very first visit, Hayley is still connected to Pop In. Her journey has had its challenges, but through it all, she has shown immense courage and resilience. Step by step, she’s building a safer, more stable life for herself and her child.

At Pop In, we know that no woman should have to walk her path alone. With the right support, connection, and care, healing is always possible — and hope can begin to grow.

Domestic violence is not just an individual crisis—it affects families, communities, and society as a whole.

The latest statistics from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare data release of March 2025, highlight the scale of this issue. Since the age of 15:
