Newsletter December 2023

As we approach Christmas and I reflect upon 2023 I am divided by my feelings.  Firstly, the Board and I, along with the Management and Staff of Pop In are truly inspired and grateful for the continued support we have received from the community again this year.

But, I am also saddened by relentlessness of domestic and family violence across our region, state and country.

 Consider these sobering statistics:

- In 2022, 71 women fell victim to murder by a current or former partner, averaging almost 6 women per month (Recorded Crime – Victims – ABS  June 2023).

- An estimated 27% of individuals, approximately 13,500 in the Wingecarribee Shire, encountered violence or abuse by a cohabiting partner (PSS Australia ABS March 2023).

- NSW reported over 37,000 Domestic Violence-related assaults from July 2022 to June 2023 (BOSCAR Recorded Crime Statistics June 2023).

- Every minute in NSW from July 2022 to June 2023, police received 3 domestic violence incidents (BOSCAR Recorded Crime Statistics June 2023).

Domestic violence knows no boundaries—it permeates cultures, age groups, and socio-economic strata. Yet, its impact intensifies in regional areas, where geographic isolation and community dynamics compound the challenges faced by survivors.

The gravity of this issue extends beyond immediate repercussions. Women enduring DFV often flee multiple times before making a final decision, while their children, exposed to such trauma, face elevated risks of emotional and social struggles.

At Pop In we will continue the journey toward combating domestic violence. Education, advocacy, community engagement, and a resolute stance against tolerating abuse are crucial pillars in our strategy.

We are grateful that you have chosen to walk with us on this journey, and wish you and your families, friends and communities a peaceful Christmas and prosperous New Year.

You may be aware that 1800RESPECT was launched as a 24/7 confidential counselling and referral service over a decade ago, Have you heard that, under the first national plan to reduce violence against women and children, they have now introduced a discreet text message service? This in an important initiative that will support those experiencing the impacts of domestic and family violence, to access support and education in non-threatening and in a safe way.

It not only provides further access to services, it creates a sense of safety from the first interaction, allowing greater control for the individual in managing how and when they access the support they need.

It's a welcome addition to services here in the Southern Highlands, where, like other regional and rural communities, seeking support can be difficult.

The number to text 1800RESPECT is 0458 737 732.

A busy month of community support

School Hampers

Thank you to all of the staff, parents and students of Oxley College Junior School for their hamper drive.

On an incredibly hot day Stella and Ivy (pictured) delivered the hampers, which were gratefully accepted by Cath and Jane from Pop In.

These hampers will be distributed to families across the Southern Highlands who otherwise would be struggling this Christmas. Thank you girls! Thank you Oxley College!

Thank you Isabella!

A highlight of the Southern Highlands social calendar must be the Champagne Brunch hosted by Isabella Loneragen of Isabella Loneragen Skin.

Along with the bubbles and brunch treats, guests were entertained by comedian Jackie Leob.  Over $9800 was raised on the day, with a further $200 being donated after the event. Thank you Isabella, these funds will go directly to supporting women in the Southern Highlands navigating domestic and family violence.

Christmas Food Drive

Thank you to the residents of Bundanoon and surrounding villages who rallied around Pop In and OzHarvest for a Christmas Food Drive.

Over $6,000 worth of pantry items, including nappies, sanitary products, baby wipes and long life baby food, was donated.

Bunnings BBQ

Thank you to our volunteers and Board Members who assisted with the first Pop In Bunnings BBQ. A slightly cooler day saw over the stall take over $1700 in sausage sizzle sales!

Thank you to Michele and Finette for their donated portuguese tarts and gingerbread people.  They were very yummy and popular!
